Mumbai bears witness to all the transition in architecture styles, with the Imperial Art-Deco rock structures, juxtaposed with the post independence brick structures and now the latest swanky looking glass structures. With all the sense evading the architects aping the west, glass is becoming the predominant feature of all buildings, increasing the pressure on air conditioning in an energy starved high nation like ours. The virus slowly spreads from commercial complex to envelop residential buildings.
Looking through the glass at my office or home, the view is marked by the three magnificent glass towers of Beau Monde, rising unabashedly high in strikingly contrasting humble surroundings. The two triangles can be seen from almost all over the city, marking the coordinates of my house and office. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower with its light sweeping the city feels like a giant robot keeping a watch over the city, a symbol of human victory and power over nature and a sense of comfort and security. At the sight of these towers, however, gloom descends over me, as glass, like Eucalyptus trees, represents an alien misfit for India and I am overpowered by a strong will to weed it out!
great description, very carefully chosen words….good going signora.
So many such things we share our angst in and with!
And the “glass-homes” syndrome is really catching up in my part of the country too!
And I like the title, this somehow seems familiar
